This is a half-day, Level 1 Monarch System motivational interviewing overview workshop for working Entry-to-Practice PharmD students at Memorial University (MUN) in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The MUN Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree is comprised of five years of study once admitted to the Pharmacy program plus completion of 10 specific prerequisite courses (30 credit hours) prior to admission. The Monarch motivational interviewing 3-hour workshop provides a meaningful overview of MI using the Monarch System’s unique approach. Our method integrates MI with other impactful behaviour change practices such as coaching methods and key elements of behaviour change theories/applications. We will explore basic Motivational Interviewing concepts such as the use of open-ended questions, affirmations or acknowledgements, reflective listening at 3 levels, using summaries, advising with permission, and communicating from a place of empathy – all leading toward the effective use of MI in patient care. The workshop is closed to MUN PharmD Entry-to-Practice students. If you want more information on this PharmD program, please view the MUN School of Pharmacy site.
