Monarch Applied Motivational Interviewing & Coaching Skills for Memorial University 4th Year Entry-to-Practice PharmD Students ~ 13 Sept 2022 {via Zoom}

This is the second half of our introductory Monarch Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshop; this PharmD student group completed the first half of the course in the Fall of 2021. The event in total (both workshop “halves”) provides a meaningful overview of MI using The Monarch System’s unique approach which integrates MI with other impactful and evidence-based behaviour change practices such as coaching methods and key elements of behaviour change theories/applications. The workshop is sponsored by the Pharmacy Program at the Memorial University of Newfoundland  and is restricted to PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) 4th year entry-to-practice students registered for the Fall 2022 term. PharmD Program information is available from Dr Stephen Coombs, phone 709-864-2725, email In this workshop, we will review the MI tools and skills shared one year ago. Using video MI examples, breakout room practice sessions, case study client examples, and full group discussions, we will explore concepts and skills that build on the first workshop learnings. These concepts include using the Elicit-Provide-Elicit model for offering advice with permission; building confidence in using MI through practice and feedback opportunities; amplifying the skill of acknowledgement; strengthening listening skills; and building patient empowerment. A special emphasis in the workshop will be learning how to use and apply patient values in creating a long-term commitment or adherence to clients’ behaviour change desires/goals. The workshop runs from 1:00 – 4:00 Newfoundland & Labrador time zone. For more information about the Monarch System and our workshops and services, please visit out website at
